THEMA: What do the rules say.....
#213
What do the rules say..... vor 4 Jahren, 2 Monaten
following situation:
Runners on 1st & 2nd - batter hit a fly ball to right field that was caught - runner on 2nd took off without tagging up, runner on 1st tagged up and then ran to 2nd - the right fielder (new guy, didn't know what to do) made a bad throw to first and the runner from 1st made it to second before the ball did.....the way I see it both runners are out - the guy on 2nd because he didn't tag up AND the guy who came from 1st because he touched 2nd base while it was "technically" still occupied by the runner who ran without tagging up!! It should have a double play that would have ended the inning but the other team insisted that it was only one out and sent the runner who originally started on 1st back to that base.

Who is right?!
would appreciate it if someone could help us in this matter!

Brew Crew

Guess I'll answer my own question since nobody else seems to know :

e. Failure of a preceding runner to touch a base, or to leave a base legally
on a caught fly ball and who is declared
out does not affect the status of a succeeding runner who touches bases in
proper order.

guess that means the runner was safe on 2nd & didn't have to return to 1st....not that it made much of a difference, a 3-run homer was hit shortly afterwards so he made it home safely anyway! :coolsmiley:

:smiley6600:
I, of course, had to ask the grand old oracle .. ooops i meant Scott. He told me the same as you already found out. In addition he said, that the opposite team has to appeal the play, because the umpire may notice that the runner left early but would do nothing about it.

That´s why you should know the rules before you play. Making up rules as you go along just sucks! Look what happened to you in Prague you have been pitching for years from the wrong distances and in Prague from the right distance you could not find the plate. Just a hint, buy or download the new rule book every year with the new amendments that would help. LOL Charles
